The nasolabial fold is a deep line that extended from the edges of the nose to the edges of the mouth. Everyone has this and it is not a medical condition that needs treatment. As people getting older, the collagen, elastin and fat layer under the skin around the face started to thin which leads up to the more prominent nasolabial fold. This can be due to a multitude of factors such as long exposure to sunlight, pollution and smoking.

The nasolabial fold is better not to be obliterated completely as it is the result of muscle interaction around the mouth and cheeks. Prominent nasolabial fold, however, can be reduced to a cosmetically pleasing appearance. Here are ways to treat nasolabial fold:

  • Dermal Filler

This is a method of injecting a solution usually containing hyaluronic acid and calcium hydroxylapatite. Dermal filler acts by filling the gap under the wrinkles or fold to make the skin more elastic by increasing the volume around it. The solution will also stimulate the production of collagen that is essential for skin integrity. The advantage of having a dermal filler is the result will look more natural to the people. Dermal filler effects can last up to 6-24 months.

  • Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy is an evolution of dermal filler procedure. The difference is the solution it is used. Mesotherapy uses a cocktail of amino acids (protein building-block), vitamins, minerals and peptides that are injected under the skin layer. Instead of just filling the layer under the skin, the solution used in mesotherapy is purposely used to encourage collagen and elastin production together to rejuvenate the skin with the nutrients given.

Mesotherapy will give a relatively quick result as quick as 1-2 days after treatment. Some people with deeper nasolabial folds may require up to 2-4 sessions. The treatment is safe, not painful and with no downtime (period to full recovery).

  • Fractional CO2 Laser Treatment

This is a type of skin re-surface treatment. The principle of fractional CO2 laser treatment is by inducing damage to the deep end of the skin which in turn stimulate skin healing with collagen and elastin production without damaging the outer layer of the skin. The treatment, however, has the downside of having a downtime which can vary according to people with most last up to 3-5 days. The treatment will leave the patient feeling like having a sunburn but the advantage is that the treatment will be done in one session only.

  • Non-Surgical Thread Lift

This is an alternative and perhaps better than a surgical facelift for the deep nasolabial problem. The method uses a biodegradable thread that is put under the skin to give a physical tension to the skin hence obliterate the nasolabial fold. The effect of the thread insertion also stimulates collagen production which makes this method to have a longer effect.

As a summary, nasolabial fold is a natural contour formed on our face but with age and other factors, the folds can be so prominent that it is unpleasant for some people. Treatment for nasolabial folds has been proven safe and effective. Consult an expert aesthetician if you have an inquiry regarding which method suits best.
